Aislin's Diagnosis. May 25, 2010

Aislin's official diagnosis is Developmental Dislocation (Displaysia) of the Hip (DDH).

Basically the ball on the top of her femur is not in the socket joint, it is above it. She will have to have surgery on both sides. They only do one side at a time. Her Left hip will be done first.

The official name of the surgery is: Left hip open reduction, femeral shortening and rotation osteotomy with possible dega.So in laymen's terms, she will have her bone cut in half and shortened, then rotated and they will open her hip socket up and move her bones to the correct position.

She will be in the hospital for 5 days with an epidural for the first 3 days for pain releif. She will be in a body cast for 6 weeks following surgery and then in an abduction orthosis for six weeks. Then we'll wait a month and do the whole thing again on the otherside.

Then a year later she will have another surgery to remove the pins that held her bones back together.

Her first surgery was scheduled for July 19th.

Here is a picture of what her hips look like. The only difference is that she has the dislocation on both sides.

We were quite shocked that she would need such an intrusive procedure, since she walked right after her first birthday and she hasn't really shown signs that this hurt her.
